COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, April 23, 2025 — The Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Space ISAC), in collaboration with Capella Space and Viasat, successfully conducted a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Owner Operator Interference Indicator Sharing demo at the 40th Annual Space Symposium. This live demonstration showcased Space ISAC’s groundbreaking progress in machine-to-machine sharing of space related threat intelligence, marking a significant milestone in enhancing information sharing on threats and vulnerabilities. Capella Space and Viasat serve as co-chairs of the LEO Owner Operators Affinity Group stood up last August.

The objective of this demo was to advance real-time threat intelligence sharing between satellite operators and security defenders. By leveraging actual operational data, Space ISAC refined detailed threat reports into essential elements of information, enabling owners, operators and defenders to respond effectively. These insights were then formatted into Structured Threat Information Expression (STIX), ensuring seamless and standardized sharing across platforms.

“This successful demonstration underscores the power of collaboration in tackling space security challenges,” said Space ISAC Executive Director, Erin Miller. “We are building a future where threat intelligence flows seamlessly between organizations, strengthening the collective defenses in the space domain.”

Space ISAC’s machine to machine sharing framework plays a critical role in the exchange of indicators of compromise (IOCs) and cyber threat intelligence (CTI). We are now setting a new norm for threat information sharing in the space industry that addresses indicators of attack (IoAs) and indicators of behavior (IoBs). The LEO OO Affinity Group indicator sharing initiative is further expanding this approach to include additional space-related threat vectors, enabling a more comprehensive and automated defense mechanism.

“Viasat is committed to supporting the Space ISAC in its goal of improving information sharing capabilities across the industry to enhance the security of space technology and services,” said Viasat’s Nick Saunders, Chief Cybersecurity and Data Officer, Global Space Networks. “This demonstration was another example of why collaboration is fundamental to effective threat sharing and analysis, and we’re excited to continue contributing our expertise to this effort.”

This development leverages advanced tools, capabilities, and features that address the need for timely information sharing with our tools. We integrate the capabilities of the commercial space industry in our approach, so global governments can see what’s possible when the space industry uses data fusion to inform operations.

“Capella Space’s core focus on delivering secure and reliable systems includes supporting the Space ISAC’s invaluable mission to protect the industry’s collective space assets,” said Leslie Kershaw, Chief Information Security Officer at Capella Space. “We were honored to participate in this demo and showcase how the Space ISAC is making threat information sharing seamless and accessible.”

Looking ahead, Space ISAC, Capella Space and Viasat are eager to see space operators leveraging this collaborative data sharing capability. Together, we aspire to raise the security posture for the global space community. This demonstration milestone marks a significant increase in the visibility of real-time threat indicators for commercial space operators.

We encourage every entity with space assets or infrastructure to get involved in the Space ISAC and demonstrate their security capability to the trusted global space community today.

BACKGROUND

Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) is a 501(c)(6) organization that serves as the all-threats security information source for the public and private space sector. Founded in 2019, Space ISAC became an official member of the National Council of ISACs in 2020. The Space ISAC Watch Center achieved initial operational capability in March 2023.

Space ISAC is located at the Kevin W O’Neil Cybersecurity Research and Education Building at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Space ISAC serves to facilitate collaboration across the global space industry to enhance our ability to prepare for and respond to vulnerabilities, incidents, and threats; to disseminate timely and actionable information among member entities; and to serve as the primary communications channel for the sector with respect to this information. After opening the Watch Center in 2023, member services include support for response, mitigation, and resilience initiatives, while breaking down communication silos of public-private information sharing.

Space ISAC founding members include: Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc.
